| The Making of An American Dream |
The Central City Parkway opened November 19, 2004 and is the result of more than 10 years of planning. It was a privately funded project of the Central City Business Improvement District (CCBID), comprised of local businesses and property owners, who agreed to tax themselves to support a bond issue to pay for the construction of the $38.3 million roadway, thus keeping the burden off of Colorado taxpayers. The CCBID worked closely with local and regional government agencies to ensure that the roadway was built with the drive, the environment and the surrounding local communities in mind. |
| About the Highway |
Designed to make driving the new roadway an enjoyable, relaxing and scenic experience, Central City Parkway is estimated to take just 12 minutes from I-70 in good weather conditions. The road is an 8.4-mile four-lane highway that runs from Hidden Valley at I-70 Exit 243 straight into downtown Central City. It was constructed with scenic views, long and straight sight lines, and design speeds of up to 55 mph. It is maintained and policed by Central City. |
| An Easy Drive |
The Central City Parkway is a safe and modern roadway, constructed to meet or exceed Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) standards. The roadway has a total paved width of 64 feet that includes 8-foot wide shoulders on each side, allowing drivers to pull completely off the roadway in emergencies. It has been designed to include special rock-catch ditches to help prevent falling rock from bounding onto the roadway. Where necessary, rock faces have been bolted and covered with steel netting. The maximum grade along the roadway is just under eight percent, which is similar to the grade on the eastbound frontage road to I-70 at Floyd Hill. |
| Scenic Experience |
The beauty of the drive alone is enough of a reason to take the trip, with scenic viewpoints to see wildlife, such as big horn sheep, mule deer and elk, as well as to take in the views of the mountain meadows and hillsides along the way. There are a number of old abandoned gold mines along the drive as well. |
| Construction Partners |
The Central City Parkway was constructed by the design/build team of Ames Construction and HNTB Companies, along with the engineering consulting firms of Sellards & Grigg, and TST Infrastructure, which provided construction administration and oversight. |
